Club History 2000 onwards


In 2001 The Junior Football team took part in the “A” grade but made no impression while the Intermediate teams fared no better.

The Minor Hurling team returned to the “B” grade but made no progress.

For many years the County Board Draw plays a major role in financing the Club’s activities.

On the Juvenile front there was a price to pay for the previous year’s success when those teams had to compete in higher grades. Most of them performed very well but failed to reach the Finals.

In 2002 the Minor Football team reached the Semi Final. Two missed penalties proved costly and they lost by 2-7 to 2-5.

The U/21 Football team were defeated by Ballyporeen after a replay in the “B” Semi Final.

The Intermediate Football team lost to Killenaule by a point. In the County championship they lost to Newport in the Quarter Final stage.

The Minor Hurling team qualified for the “B” Final but lost to Carrick Davins by 3-15 to 2-8.

The Junior Hurling team won two and drew three of their matches. As often happens the best players were wanted for the Intermediate Hurling and they made no further progress.

In Hurling the Intermediate team lost to Cahir by 2-12 to 2-8 in the Semi Final, having already beaten them by 1-14 to 1-7 in the league stages.

Seamus Roche was coming to prominence on the refereeing scene and was “Man in the Middle” for several Inter County matches.

Tommy Lonergan acted as umpire for Brian White at the International Rules match Ireland V Australia in Croke Park.

For many years David Keyes has been doing an excellent job in repairing hurleys.

There was a new fund raising venture namely “Want to be a Thousandaire” based on the TV programme “Who wants to be a Millionaire” doing the rounds. This event was held in Hotel Minella and generated €20,000 which went to clear the debt on the Clubhouse.

There was an upsurge of interest in Camogie where Billy Stokes together with Jim & Laura Healy were the main organisers.

On the Juvenile front, it was one of the quieter years with no Final appearances.

The Summer Camp organised by John Burns continues to go from strength to strength with several GAA personalities in attendance.

County U/21 Title – A First for the Club

In Hurling in 2003 the Minor team showed promise. The only match they lost was to St Patrick’s. In the Semi Final they were again drawn against St Pats and went down by 2-11 to 0-2.

The Intermediate team reached the Semi Final but lost to Fethard by 1-13 to 1-11.

In Football the U/21 team reached the “B” Final where they defeated Carrick Davins by 1-10 to 0-8. This was the Club’s first ever Title in this Grade.

In the County Semi Final they defeated Lattin-Cullen by 0-12 to 1-4.

The County Final was played in Cashel and our opponents were Gortnahoe-Glengoole. Excitement mounted in the week preceding the Final as the Club sought their first adult Title in 31 years. At half time they led by 0-7 to 0-5 after playing with the wind. In the second half they showed great determination and were soon in control and went on to win by 1-12 to 0-8. There were scenes of great jubilation when Johnny Walsh accepted the Cup from John Costigan Chairman of the County Board .

The Junior Football team reached the Final but lost to Commercials by 0-12 to 1-8.

The Intermediate Football team qualified for the South Final where they defeated Killenaule by 2-9 to 1-7. After the match John Roche, who captained the side, was presented with the appropriately named John Kehoe Cup.

Earlier in the championship Kilsheelan defeated Grangemockler. In the County Semi Final they again met. This time it ended in a draw and in the replay Grangemockler won by 1-12 to 0-10.

Seamus Roche acted as linesman for the All Ireland Senior Hurling Final.

For the All Ireland Senior Football Final William Robinson, Tommy and Denis Lonergan acted as umpires for referee Brian White.

As a matter of interest Kilsheelan were the only Club in the country to have officials involved in both All Ireland Senior Finals.

Since last June all South and County Board correspondence is done by email.

In January Sean Nugent was elected Secretary of the South Board.

In Juvenile Football the U/12 team reached the “B” Final where Killenaule were waiting for them. Kilsheelan were somewhat lucky to win by 1-4 to 0-5.

In the County Semi Final they met a physically stronger Newport side and went down by 2-8 to 0-4.

The U/14 Hurling team reached the Final which was against St Patricks and came with the honours by 2-3 to 1-1.

In the County Semi Final Kilsheelan met a star studded Borrisoleigh side and were beaten by 5-8 to 0-5.

In 2004 the Minor Hurling team made little impression.

The U/21 Hurlers did well via the losers group but eventually lost out to Carrick Davins by 2-12 to 1-7.

The Junior Hurling team own their opening game. This was followed by a number of walkovers. Some of the best players were needed for the Intermediate team and after a long delay combined with a lack of match practise they lost to Cahir by 6-9 to 1-8.

The Intermediate Hurling team had nine outings including a three way play-off before losing to Carrick Davins by 0-14 to 1-7.

In Football the Minor team reached the Semi Final before losing by 1-8 to 0-7.

Having won the County “B” championship in 2003 the U/21 Football team had to move up to “A” level for the first time but they made little impression.

The Intermediate Football team entered the County League for the first time where they met teams from Cork and Waterford . They went through the County Division 2 of the League unbeaten. In the Final they defeated Emily by 1-15 to 0-3.

In the County championship Kilsheelan reached the Final where they played Killenaule. At no stage did they lead and were beaten by 0-11 to 0-6.

Seamus Roche was standby referee for the All Ireland Senior Hurling Final.

The South Senior Hurling and Football Finals were played in Kilsheelan. Much voluntary work was done in the week preceding it. Unfortunately it turned out to be one of the wettest days of the year.

Club President Jimmy Prendergast received a Sean Gael Award for his lifetime of service to the Club.

At Juvenile level most of the teams were playing at a level above their ability and it was hardly surprising here were no success. The U/16 Hurling team reached the Semi Finals but were beaten by Mullinahone.

Ultimate Honour for Referee Seamus Roche

In 2005 the Minor Football team took part in the County League . Despite losing their opening match they qualified for the Final on St Patrick’s Day against Moycarkey-Borris. In an exciting match they ran out winners by 2-9 to 2-8.

In the championship they failed to match this form and never looked like serious contenders.

The Intermediate Football team started well in the championship but in the later stages they failed to strike form when beaten in the Semi Final by Mullinahone.

The Minor Hurling team reached the Semi Final against Ballybacon-Grange whom they had beaten earlier. On this occasion Ballybacon were at full strength and won by 5-11 to 0-5.

The U/21 Hurling team were beaten in the first round but through the losers group they won their way into the Semi Final. Despite giving a great display under very poor conditions they lost to St Mary’s by 2-5 to 2-4.

The Intermediate Hurling team made very little impression. They played four championship matches but lost them all.

It was a great honour for Club member Seamus Roche, and indeed all in the Club, when he refereed the All Ireland Hurling Final. His umpires were also Club members namely P J Condon, Gerry Henebry, Tommy Lonergan and Peter Moore.

For the second year in a row someone from the Club received a Sean Gael Award with the honour this time going to Tom Larkin.

On the Juvenile front the U/12 Football team reached the “B” Final but lost out to Carrick Swan by 1-5 to 0-3.

The U/12 Hurling team reached the Final where they met Fethard whom they had met earlier and the game ended in a draw. On this occasion Fethard led all the way and won by 2-2 to 1-2. The team personnel were on similar lines to the football side.

SCORERS were: Jamie Cronin 1-0, Bill Maher and Colin Gleeson 0-1 each.

As part of the Tipperary Institute Munster Council Initiative the players and mentors were taken to Thurles for coaching. They were put through a very intensive coaching session in the many skills of the game by some well known coaches including Tipperary star Lar Corbett.

In all the other grades teams performed well but unfortunately did not reach the knockout stages.

In the Community Games Colin Gleeson won the National U/12 Long Puck competition when he drove the ball 74.60metres to claim the gold Medal.

In 2006 the Minor Football team did reasonably well in the “B” competition. A number of narrow defeats put paid to their chances of reaching the knockout stages.

The U/21 Football team reached the Semi final but lost out to Clonmel Og.

The Junior Football team needed to win their last match to reach the Semi Finals but failed to do so.

The Intermediate Football team was the year’s success story. They won their two opening matches, then hit a valley period and barely scraped through to the Semi Final where they defeated Ballyporeen 0-10 to 0-6.

In the South Final they met Mullinahone in Fethard. A goal by Adrian Walsh gave them a half time lead of 1-5 to 0-2. When play resumed Adrian Walsh had a further goal. Kilsheelan were very much in the driving seat. Despite a late rally by Mullinahone they held out for a 2-10 to 1-8 victory thereby regaining the Johnny Kehoe Cup after a three year absence.

In the County Quarter Final at Fethard Kilsheelan were rocked by a first minute goal by Rockwell Rovers. At half time they were in arrears by 1-7 to 0-7. Playing their best football to date they went on to win by 0-15 to 1-9.

Scorers: Michael Mc Hugh 0-3, John Roche, Eoin Ryan, Richard Crotty, Adrian Walsh, Edward Sweeney and Pierce Larkin 0-2 each.

Again Fethard was the venue as Kilsheelan took on Thurles Sarsfields. Kilsheelan made a lightening start and had goals from Michael Mc Hugh and Adrian Walsh (penalty) and led by 2-7 to 0-3 at half time. A further goal by Edward Sweeney left Kilsheelan winners by 3-11 to 0-8.

Scorers: Michael Mc Hugh 1-5, Adrian Walsh and Edward Sweeney 1-2 each, John Roche and Richard Crotty 0-1 each.

The County Final against Mullinahone took place in Fethard and Kilsheelan were quietly confident of bridging the 36 year gap since the last Adult County Title. There was tremendous support for the team which far outnumbered Mullinahone. At half time Mullinahone led by 1-6 to 0-5. The Kickham side were much stronger physically. The second half was an uphill battle before we went down by 1-9 to 0-10.

The Minor Hurlers won their opening match in convincing fashion. It was downhill after that and they failed to reach the knockout stages.

The U/21 Hurling team were beaten in the first round against Moyle Rovers and in the losers group they also lost out.

The Junior Hurling team defeated Marlfield by 4-12 to 2-6 with Sean Nugent scoring 2-9. They also had a 6-22 to 0-1 victory over Clerihan. They beat Marlfield by 4-9 to 0-7. In the Semi final they lost out to St Mary’s by 2-10 to 1-8.

The Intermediate Hurling team won only one of their three matches but still managed to get into a play-off. Their early victory was over Fr Sheehy’s but this time they lost to them by 1-11 to 1-9.

Finance: The Club’s biggest income is through the County Draw with over 420 members.

Membership: We had 118 Paid Up members this year.

This year Billy Stokes was the recipient of a Sean Gael Award for his lifetime service to the Club.

The U/12 hurling team reached the “B” Semi Final but lost to Cahir in a great match after a replay.

In the U/14 “B” football Semi Final we lost to Carrick Swan by 3-9 to 4-1.

The U/14 Hurling team raised eyebrows when they defeated Carrick Swan by 2-6 to 2-2 at Cloneen. The Final was played at the same venue against Moyle Rovers. After an outstanding match in which fortunes swayed to and for a point by Stephen Ahearne gave Kilsheelan victory by the narrowest of margins.

In the County Semi Final despite putting up a great show they were well beaten by Borrisokane.

In the Cumann Na Bunscoil competition Kilsheelan defeated Kilkeary N.S. by 3-10 to 1-3 in Semple Stadium

2007: Minor Football: At the AGM it was noted that Kilsheelan would not have sufficient players and it was agreed that they would join with St Patrick’s and were called Slievenamon. In Division 1 of the county League they won their way to the Final. This took place in Cashel against J K Brackens. They led all the way but in the end they were somewhat lucky to win by 2-9 to 0-13.

After the match Chairman of the Football Board Pete Savage presented the trophy to the winning Captain Paul Denn.

In the championship they had an impressive run with their only defeat to Moyle Rovers. They won their way to the Final and again met Moyle Rovers who beat them by 2-11 to 1-3.

U/21 “B” Football: In the championship Kilsheelan defeated Fethard and Mullinahone to reach the Final against Carrick Davins. This took place at Monroe. Kilsheelan were easily the better side and won by 1-16 to 2-5.

In the County Semi Final they met Burgess. This proved to be an outstanding hour’s football and it took extra time to separate the sides. Burgess, who were much stronger physically, won out by 4-11 to 2-13.

In Junior"B" Football Kilsheelan lost their opening match to Carrick Swan. They went on an unbeaten run and reached the Semi Final where they met Commercials. Commercials equalised with the last kick of the game to force a replay. On this occasion Commercials won by 1-7 to 0-4.

In Intermediate Football apart from one defeat to Fr Sheehy’s Kilsheelan reached the Final where they took on Ballyporeen at Ardfinnan. At one stage they were nine points down. They made a great recovery but lost by 1-15 to 0-17.

In the County Quarter Final they defeated Kildangan by 3-14 to 2-7. In the Semi Final against Rockwell Rovers they were defeated by 0-7 to 0-5.

In the Minor Hurling "A" championship they again joined with St Patrick’s when they reached the Semi Final where they lost to Moyle Rovers by 5-14 to 2-5.

In the U/21"B" Hurling championship Moyle Rovers again proved their bogey team when they lost to them in the Semi Final.

The Junior "B" Hurling team just missed out for a place in the knockout stages.

The Intermediate Hurling team had a very poor run and lost all seven matches.

The Golf Classic organised by the Finance committee comprising of Keith O’Brien, Dan O’Connor, David Power, Eleanor Roche and Liam Stokes was a wonderful success with over €20,000 raised. Jim Strang & Sons were the main sponsors.

Burke & Ryan Funds : A Table Quiz was held in Robinsons in support of the Burke Family who lost their home due to a fire and Noel Ryan Kilcash who suffered ill health.

We had 440 members in the County Draw.

We had a total Membership of 129 members which is an increase of 11 on 2006

Website: The general feeling is that more people are logging on to the Website which is updated weekly with any news and also all match reports both adult and juvenile are recorded.

St Augustine's: The combination of Kilsheelan and Fethard who won the South Senior Hurling Championship for the first and only time in 1982 held a re-union in Hotel Minella in October.

County Champions '68 & '72: In recent years the County Board have been honouring teams who won County Senior Titles in the past. County Senior Football Final day was Sunday 4th November in Cashel and this year it was the turn of the Kilsheelan winners of ’68 & ’72 to be feted. Later in the evening they were treated to a meal in the Clonmel Park Hotel. Each member, or their representative, was presented with a framed copy of the Photograph taken earlier in the day as a momento.

The South Board celebrated its Centenary this year. One of the main events was a Parade through Clonmel on Easter Monday and our Club was well represented. Other important occasions were the launching of the Centenary book and the Banquet attended by GAA President Nicky Brennan.

There were also a number of graveyard commemorations including Gambonsfield where wreaths were laid at the graves of Johnny Kehoe and Jerry O’Keeffe. On the same evening there was also a presence at Old Kilsheelan Graveyard.

The U/10 Football championship was played under a blitz format. Kilsheelan took the South Title when they defeated St Patrick’s by 2-8 to 0-2.

The subs, who played an important part over the six games emphasizes the importance of the squad were: Kyle O Connell, Jack O Donnell, John Bayliss, Conor Murphy and Sean Martin.

In the U/12 “B” Football Final Ardfinnan defeated Kilsheelan by 3-5 to 1-3 after a replay.

Pride of Place goes to the U/14 Football team who proved much too strong for all opposition and in the County Final defeated Golden-Kilfeacle by 6-13 to 0-2.

In the South Tipp Centenary U-10 hurling tournament in Cahir Kilshelan edged out St Patrick’s by two points in the Final.

U/14 Hurling team who won the Carrigeen Tournament on Sunday evening last. This competition was played under floodlights on an artificial surface measuring eighty metres by forty metres. In the Final they beat Emeralds from Urlingford by 4-6 to 3-6 after a hectic game

Kevin Larkin lined out for Tipperary in the Tony Forristal Tournament in Waterford. They qualified for the Final but were unfortunately beaten by Waterford.

Finance: The Juvenile Club held a cycle from Croke Park to Kilsheelan when 18 cyclists (The Croker Cruisers) made the journey. Over €50,000 was raised with 25% going to the Hospice Movement.

Kilcash National School made history on 11st December when they became County Champions in Cumann na mBunscoil Football Roinn F. They beat Kilross 10-8 to 3-1. teams to become County champions.

TEAM: Aaron Fogarty, Joe O’Neill., Eimer Columby, Eric O’Shea (Capt.), Brendan Martin, Martin Gibbs and Brian Twohig played their hearts out as well as the subs of Kelly Walsh, Ryan Murray, Becky Mullins, Aaron Dempsey and Sean Martin.

In 2008 the Minor Football Football team were first on the field and reached the County Division 2 Final and lost to Ardfinnan by 1-11 to 2-5. In the Championship a combination of injuries and small panel brought mixed results and we failed to complete our full compliment of matches.

The U/21 Football team had similar problems with personnel while players playing other codes left us down and we lost the first round and also lost the next round in the losers group.

The Junior Football went into the championship well prepared and lost only one match out of four to reach the "B" Semi Final. Clonmel Og were our opponents in very poor ground conditions and our lightweight attack made little impression as we were beaten by 1-9 to 2-1.

The Intermediate Football got of to a very poor start as there was a general lack of interest in training and they lost the opening two matches. It was now down to win or your out. The team pulled themselves together and recorded three wins in a row. They got their revenge over Ballyporeen in a replay to qualify for the Final were they met Clonmel Og. An injury hit side failed to last the pace and they lost by a point on a scoreline of 0-12 to 1-8.

As Division losers the team qualified for the County Quarter Final. A fine second half display resulted in a 0-12 to 1-6 victory. In the County Semi Final against Golden-Kilfeacle a late goal by Edward Sweeney helped Kilsheelan to victory by 1-11 to 0-13.

In the County Final Clonmel Og were Kilsheelan's opponents, hopes were high that they would end the 36 year famine since our last County Adult Title. The sides were level at half time but Clonmel Og's superior fitness in the second half was decisive and they won by 2-9 to 2-6.

We affiliated teams in Minor & U/21 Hurling but had to withdraw as we did not have sufficent players.

At the AGM it was agreed not to field a team in Junior "B" Hurling.

Sean Nugent Jnr and Michael Ryan took care of the Intermediate Hurling team. There was a lack of interest early on. The team started all their matches impressively but defeat was their lot in all five games.

The Clubs finances are in a healthy state due mainly to the success of the County Draw. A new fundraising idea took place called Score Predictition and was very successful.

Tom Larkin was honoured on the 50th Anniversary of winning the only Senior All Ireland Hurling Medal in the Club. An enjoyable function took place in Robinsons and a presentation was made to Tom.

John Donovan was honoured with a Sean Gael Award - for services to the Club in the past.

Former President & respected Administrator Jimmy Prendergast passed away in January.

Frankie Murphy a former Treasurer also went to his eternal reward.

The greatest shock of all was the passing of William Robinson. He was a former player, administrator, referee and was very much involved in GAA activity throughout the County and Province until his untimely death.

In the U/10 Hurling blitz Kilsheelan-Kilcash retained their Title when they defeated Cahir in the Final.

After an impressive run the U/12 Football team lost to Ballingarry in the Semi Final.

They reached the Final in the U/12 "B" Hurling but lost out to Ballylooby by 1-3 to 0-4.

The U/16 Football team reached the "B" Final. In an earlier roudn they had an easy win over Ballyporeen. However, the the Final Ballyporeen turned the tables winning by 4-5 to 2-7.

In the various colleges competitions Clonmel High School were represented by Kilsheelan players Kevin Larkin, John Kehoe, Conor Murphy, Adrian Mc Guire and Bill Maher.

In the Cumann na Bunscoil Kilcash National School defeated Castleiney by 10-8 to 3-1.

In 2009 the Minor Football team got to the Final of Division 2 of the County League but lost out ot Golden-Kilfeacle. Having entered in the "B" championship, the team had to withdraw due to lack of players.

The U/21 Football team completed in the "B" championship. In the first round they lost to Knockmealdown Gaels. First round losers got a second chance, again a shortage of players together with lack of interest meant that Cahir got a walkover.

The Junior Football team had mixed luck and failed to qualify for the knockout stages.

The Intermediate Football team were unbeaten after six matches. Despite losing to Clonmel Og in their last match they qualified for the Semi Final when they met Ballyporeen. It was an uphill battle after conceding three goals in the first quarter and we were eventually beaten by a single point.

The Minor Hurling team were narrowly defeated by Swan in their opening match in the "B" championship. In the next round they defeated St Patricks in a high quality game. The Semi Final was played in Goatenbridge and in very poor ground conditions they were beaten by Cahir.

In the U/21 "B" Hurling championship, a lack of players forced the Club to team up with Marlfield. In the first round they easily defeated Cahir but lost out to Ballybacon-Grange in their next outing.

In the Junior "B" Hurling they played five matches. They came out on top in just the one match.

Having played in the Intermediate Hurling championship in 2008, the team sought and were granted Junior "A" status. They made a promising start with a win over Ballylooby-Castlegrace. It was downhill after that and their only other point gained was a draw with Newcastle.

A Development Committee namely Kevin Kelly, Sean Nugent, Keith O’Brien, Dan O’Connor, David Power and Liam Stokes produced a comphrensive Development Plan.

LA NA gCLUB: To celebrate the 125th Anniversary of the Association every Club was expected to use their grounds for gaelic activities on Sunday 10th May. A time capsule filled with appropriate memorabilia was hidden away and is not to be opened until 10th May 2034.

The U/10 Football competition was in the form of a blitz. After a number of fine displays the team won their way to the Final where they were beaten by Clonmel Commercials.

In the U/12 "B" Football championship the team easily won their way to the Final but were beaten by Moyle Rovers after a replay. Moyle Rovers later took County honours.

In the U/14 Football "B" competition the team had a very impressive run to the Final and easily defeated Killenaule. In the County Semi Final they beat Burgess by 4-6 to 1-2.

At sunny Holycross they took on Galtee Rovers in the Final. After a slow start they had a big lead at half time. After the interval they ran riot and ran out winners by 9-11 to 1-2.

In the U/16 Football we fielded in the "A" competition and lost only one match in the group stages. In the Semi Final they met Commercials. Having led for most of the first half they were beaten by 4-9 to 1-7.

In the U/12 "B" Hurling championship the team had easy wins in all their matches except one defeat to Killenaule. In the Semi Final they had a narrow win over Cahir. In the Final against Killeanule they turned the tables on them to win by 0-4 to 0-1. In the County Semi Final they had an 0-3 to 0-2 win over Moneygall.

The Final took place on the 5th September in Semple Stadium. The Club to date had never won a County Hurling Title of any description. The team started well and led by 1-2 to 0-1 at half time. Another goal early in the second half put them in the driving seat and they went on to win by 2-3 to 0-4 to make it a very historic occasion for the Club.

The U/14 Hurling team took part in the "B" championship. They won all their matches including an easy win over Ballybacon-Grange at home. In the Semi Final they were well in control against Fethard. In the Final against Ballybacon-Grange they carried the favourites tag. They had a disastrous start when Ballybacon had three goals in the first ten minutes. They never played to their full potential and were beaten by 4-4 to 1-5. Ballybacon went on to take the County Title.

The U/16 Hurling team voluntarily went up to the "A" championship. Apart from losing to St Marys they won all their matches easily. In the Semi Final Mullinahone led by eight points at one stage. Kilsheelan recovered and led at half time and eventually triumphed by 2-13 to 3-8.

In the Final agaisnt St Marys word came through that St Marys were not fielding. The South Board awarded the game to Kilsheelan but team management did not want a bloodless victory and wanted to play the Final which took place at Fethard one week later. The team struggled all through and were beaten by 2-12 to 1-9.
